Staying Safe While Gaming Online: A Guide for UK Gamers

The UK gaming community is vibrant, with millions of players enjoying everything from casual mobile games to competitive esports. However, as online gaming grows, so do the associated risks, particularly cyber threats like phishing, scams and toxic behaviour. According to a 2023 Ofcom report, phishing remains a leading cyber threat in the UK, with nine out 10 of UK adult internet users encountering cyber scams. With this in mind, you must know how to protect yourself in the gaming world and keep your online experience safe.

Passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA)

Your gaming accounts hold valuable personal information and, in many cases, payment details. To protect these accounts, use strong, unique passwords. Avoid simple or repeated passwords and consider using a password manager to generate complex passwords and keep them secure.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) as an additional security step. By doing so, even if someone guesses your password, they can’t access your account without a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone.

Phishing scams

Phishing is a significant threat to online gamers, with hackers increasingly targeting gaming platforms. Always beware of suspicious messages. Whether it’s an email, a direct message, or even an in-game chat, don’t click on unknown links. Attackers often disguise these as official communications from game developers or fellow players.

And verify the source. If you’re asked to log in or provide personal information, go directly to the official website instead of clicking through a message.

In-game purchases and financial security

In-game purchases are common, but come with risks, so secure your payment methods. Avoid saving card details on gaming platforms and when using apps that involve payments, such as an online bingo app, choose secure methods like PayPal, which offer additional fraud protection.

Monitor your transactions by regularly reviewing your bank statements for unusual or unauthorised charges. Many platforms allow you to set spending limits to prevent accidental over-purchasing.

Online harassment and toxic behaviour

Unfortunately, online gaming can sometimes foster toxic environments. According to the Cyber Security Breaches Survey, online harassment and abusive behaviour are growing concerns.

Reputable gaming platforms offer tools to block or mute toxic players. Make sure you know how to report harassment or any violations of the platform’s community guidelines. Taking regular breaks and setting boundaries can help mitigate the impact of toxic behaviour on your mental health.

Trusted platforms and software updates

Using secure and reputable gaming platforms is critical for avoiding malicious threats. Download games only from recognised and trusted sources, such as Steam, PlayStation Network or Xbox.

Ensure your gaming systems and security software are always up to date. Updates often include patches for security vulnerabilities that hackers may try to exploit.
